Soriano Multipurpose Fiber Corporation positioned itself as a viable solution to climate change in a presentation entitled “Coco-Coir: An Eco-Product for a Changing Climate”, to the largest international environmental fair and conference in Asia.

The event dubbed as the Eco-products International Fair (EPIF) 2009 is a response to commitments made in the 1997 Kyoto Protocol which aims to reduce greenhouse gases and promote emissions trading.  By showcasing ecologically-viable products, the organizers believe that government enti, businesses, private organizations, and the publik will contribute to the development of a sustainable society.

Soriano EcoFiber, a FSSI subsidiary company, also showcased its cocofiber, cocopeat, geonets and flat plant liners that attracted several individual consumers, gardeners, architects and builders.

Cocofiber, one of the major products of Soriano was once considered as a waste in coconut manufacturing. Coco-coir is extracted from mature coconut husks and transformed into high quality coir products used in the production of ropes, nets, mats and liners. It has now become one of the most eco-friendly products with excellent water absorption and retention making it an ideal plant growing medium and soil conditioner.

To propagate the use of geonets for erosion-reduction measures, FSSI also launched a guidebook entitled "Coconets for Bioengineering" that features the characteristics, uses and applications of geonets.

Some 161 local and foreign participants also attended the three-day International Conference on Sustainable Production, Sustainable Consumption, Sustainable Forum which is a special event of EPIF.Former President Fidel V. Ramos, the keynote speaker urged the local participants "to take concerted action, which is the only recourse to make a difference, and to care, share and dare," and for the foreign delegates to carry the same message. Unity, solidarity and team work, he said, is needed among Asian partners.

Participation in the EPIF is one of the series of trade fairs that FSSI aims to accomplish to help increase market opportunities for eco-enterprises like Soriano Eco-Fiber.
